Avira AntiVir Personal Edition is my top pick for the best free antivirus software if you're looking for the best protection against virus, spyware and rootkit threats. AntiVir is very light on resources and the detection rate of malware is outstanding, however, there are some reservations.

First, AntiVir does not include e-mail scanning, this is only available in the paid version. The lack of an e-mail scanner means that AntiVir won't warn you of infected emails before you open them. However, should you open an infected email, AntiVir will still spring into action, so it doesn't mean that you're not protected from email-based infections. Second, AntiVir's updates are very slow, and occasionally gets interrupted with server problems. Third, AntiVir has advertisements that appear with every update, altough you can disable these ads. Also, you can disable AntiVir's splash screen if you wish, as some people find it intrusive. Finally, AntiVir has a time-limited license. It is renewable, but be aware that you'll have to periodically go through the hoops.

Neither Avast nor AVG is as effective in detection of virus infections and other malware as AntiVir.

Avast! Home Edition is also an excellent free antivirus. Although its funky media player style interface is not to everyone's taste, skins can be downloaded for free, such as the MacLover OS X skin. Avast is the least restricted antivirus out of the three, with both spyware removal and antirootkit capabilities, full real-time capabilities, including web, e-mail, IM, P2P and network shields, as well as boot-time scanning. Avast is fairly light on resources, and is also the only antivirus to continue support for older Windows platforms. Avast can be set as a set-and-forget solution through the use of their Silent Mode ("Customize" under the detailed settings for On-Access Protection Control), where malware is automatically removed.

On the other hand, Avast has a relatively high rate of false positives. Like AntiVir, it also requires periodic re-registration, whereas AVG Free does not.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is a good set-and-forget solution, as it's capable of both automatically updating and removing threats. This is especially useful if you want to set this up on a friend's computer who is not so computer literate.

The latest version AVG Antivirus free makes further improvements to an already solid antivirus program. It now includes spyware removal, phishing and email scam protection and LinkScanner Pro.

However, AVG Antivirus free has grown considerably in size and resource usage, and has very slow scan speeds. AVG also had continuous problems with updating signatures on my computer. AVG has advertisements, but they can be disabled.

These three free antivirus software are excellent free antivirus programs that provides a real alternative to the major commerical antivirus software.

You can increase your protection if you run on demand scans with another antivirus. On demand scans can be run regularly to check for virus, trojan, worm, spyware, adware, keylogger, rootkit and other malware that may have been missed by your main antivirus scanner. If you have a good preventive security strategy in place, however, the extra protection an on demand antivius scanner offers is minimal.

You can also use one of the free antivirus mentioned above as an on-demand antivirus scanner. One advantage is that you can set scheduled scans if you wish.

Avira AntiVir Personal Edition: During the install, under "Choose Installation Type" select "Custom", and under "Install Components" untick "AntiVir Guard".

Avast! Home Edition: During the install, under "Configuration" select "Custom", and untick all the items under "Resident Protection".

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition: In the interface, open the "Resident Shield Component" and untick "Resident Shield Active".

Another option is a-squared Free, which started as a trojan remover but recently included the Ikarus antivirus engine. The detection rate is incredible, and a-squared also has context-menu scanning. Sadly, it is riddled with false positives, and the large update sizes make it unsuitable for dial-up users. And a-squared has a service that is running even when you aren't using it.

ذكرت صحيفة ديلي تلغراف البريطانية أن دراسات كشفت أن نوم الزوجين كل في غرفة منفصلة من شأنه تقوية العلاقة الزوجية بينهما وإضفاء أجواء من المرح والسعادة والشوق والهناء والحيوية على البيت.

وفي حديث مع الصحيفة، تبدأ السيدة لوسي بالقول إن القرب والتواصل المستمر ورفع الكلفة بين الناس عوامل قد تؤدي إلى حدوث المشاكل وربما إلى بروز مظاهر الحقد والكراهية بين أبناء المجتمع خاصة بين الأزواج.

وتعيش لوسي وزوجها سيمون (35 عاما) كل في غرفة منفصلة منذ أقاما حفل زفافهما في أكتوبر/تشرين الأول الماضي حتى بات بعض الأصدقاء ينظر إليهما وكأنهما يعودان إلى عصر الملكة فكتوريا أو عصر الإفراط في الاحتشام.

وتقول العروسة لوسي إن نومها وعريسها كل في غرفة ليس ناتجا عن زواج غير مبني على محبة، وإنما تلك الطريقة في الحياة من شأنها أن تبقي علاقة قوية بين الزوجين، مضيفة أن علاقتها بعريسها سيمون هي علاقة مملوءة بالمحبة والسعادة والعاطفة الجياشة منذ تعارفا قبل أربع سنوات.

تجنب الإزعاج

وتؤيد لوسي قول الباحثين الذين يرون أن نوم كل من الزوجين وحيدا في غرفة منفصلة من شأنه تجنب الإزعاجات الناتجة عن أصوات شخير الطرف الآخر أو الضربات اللاإرادية الناتجة عن تقلبات الشريك أثناء النوم.

وتستطرد العروس بالقول إنها رفضت الاستجابة لدعوة شريكها المتمثلة في دعوته لها للإقامة في شقته ما لم يقم بتجهيز غرفتي نوم منفصلتين، مضيفة أنه لم يبد أي مظاهر انزعاج وإنما رحب بالفكرة، وإنه قال لها إنه بالأصل لا يحب المستلزمات الأنثوية من أدوات مكياج وغيرها وهي تتناثر في غرفته وتسبب الفوضى في المكان.

وتضيف لوسي أنها جهزت غرفتها بكل المستلزمات الخاصة الممكنة وأنها أضفت عليها أجواء أنثوية، وأنها أضافت إليها خزانة لحفظ وتعليق الملابس كي يستخدمها شريكها عند زيارته لها في غرفتها، وأن سيمون أيضا أعد غرفته بطريقة تبدو عليها مظاهر الشباب والذكورية.

وتمضي الزوجة فتعبر عن مشاعر المحبة والسعادة التي تنتابها عندما يأتي زوجها سيمون لزيارتها في غرفتها المنفصلة عند منتصف الليل، فهي تعد تلك الزيارة تختلف عما لو كانت وزوجها تعيشان في غرفة النوم ذاتها، لما تحتويها من غموض في مرامي وأهداف الزيارة المفاجئة.

وتنصح لوسي الأزواج الذين يريدون تطبيق طريقتها في السعادة عبر النوم في غرف منفصلة إلى عدم الانقطاع عن التواصل بين الشريكين، بوصف التواصل يبقي أجواء التوافق بينهما.

مشاعر سعادة

من جانبه يقول سيمون إن الناس قد يصفون الزوجين اللذين يعيشان في غرفتي نوم منفصلتين وكأنهما فاشلان في حياتهما الزوجية، أو أن علاقتهما قد انتهت وتلاشت، ويضيف أنه لا يؤيد ذلك الوصف.

ويعبر سيمون عن مشاعر سعادته وهو يعيش وزوجته لوسي كل في غرفة منفصلة، ويضيف أنه يشعر بالسعادة أكثر بعدما قرأ أن الباحثين يرون أن نوم الزوجين في غرفتين مستقلتين يساعد في الحفاظ على سعادة زوجية متجددة.

ويضيف الزوج السعيد أن النوم في غرفة منفصلة يمنحه نوما عميقا وراحة وأجواء استرخاء ضرورية لمزاولة نشاطه في صبيحة اليوم التالي سواء في البيت أو العمل، وبعكس ذلك يكون المرء تعبا ميالا للغضب السريع، وفق سيمون.

ويمضي ليقول إن الشريكة قد تتسب في إزعاج شريكها أثناء نومه بطرائق مختلفة، لأن لكل طريقة في النوم قد لا تتناسب مع الآخر، مضيفا أن لوسي من عادتها أن تشد اللحاف وتبقي زوجها عرضة للبرد.

ويقول سيمون إن العيش في غرفتي نوم منفصلتين يشعر كل من الزوجين بالاستقلالية ويزيد من مشاعر الانجذاب بينهما ويشعرهما في كل مناسبة وكأنهما يتعارفان ويلتقيان للمرة الأولى.

ويضيف أنه ولسوء حظه باتت خزانته المستقلة تغص بالكثير من الأدوات الأنثوية التابعة لزوجته لوسي، ولكنه لا يشكو لآخرين إزاء ذلك، بل يشعر أنه من أسعد الأزواج في الدنيا.

يفضل أغلبية الرجال النساء السمينات؛

فقد أظهر استطلاع للرأي أجرته مواقع الكترونية أميركية متخصصة أن 85 بالمئة من الرجال وافقوا مع عبارة "لا أمانع بوجود بعض الوزن الإضافي"، بينما اشار 80 بالمئة من الرجال إلى أن النساء السمينات أقل نكداً من النحيفات.

وصرح 70 بالمئة من الرجال أنهم يهتمون بداخل المرأة أكثر من شكلها الخارجي، غير أن 90 بالمئة من النساء يعتقدن أن الرجال يجدون النساء البدينات غير جذابات.

من جهتها، قالت شيرا زويبنر مستشارة العلاقات العاطفية لهذه المواقع "تظهر هذه الاستطلاعات اختلافا كبيرا بين الطريقة التي ينظر فيها الرجال والنساء إلى العلاقات.. للأسف هذه الاختلافات بين الجنسين شائعة جدا وتقود إلى ضياع العديد من فرص إقامة علاقات".

حاسوب بصري يعمل بجزئيات الضوء

تمت بنجاح تجربة حاسوب بصري يستخدم جزيئات الضوء بدلا من مجموعة الدوائر الكهربية التقليدية لإجراء أول عملية حسابية، ويأمل علماء المجال أن تمهد هذه التجربة الطريق لإنتاج حواسيب أصغر وأسرع.

وأشاد العلماء بالخطوة رغم أن العملية الحسابية استغرقت وقتا أطول مما لو أجراها تلميذ.

وأضافوا أن تقنية رقاقة الكم البصرية، التي بحجم البنس الإنجليزي، تستخدم جزيئات منفردة من ضوء طنان يمكن أن يمهد الطريق في النهاية لموجة من الحواسيب الكمية الخارقة القوة.

وجادل فريق العمل بجامعة بريستول البريطانية بأنه بينما  يبدو إيجاد العوامل الأولية نوعا من التجريد الرياضي فإن المهمة تكمن في قلب برامج التشفير الحديثة، بما في ذلك تلك المستخدمة لتأمين اتصالات الإنترنت.

وقالت المتحدثة باسم المشروع: "لقد شارفنا على الوصول إلى النقطة التي لا يمكن للحواسيب التقليدية أن تكون أصغر منها، ومن ثم فإننا بحاجة إلى المضي في طريق جديد. نحن نتحدث عن مقياس الأشياء الدقيقة (النانو). جزيئات الضوء".

وتهدف التقنية الكمية إلى تسخير الخواص الفريدة لآليات الكم -النظرية الفيزيائية التي تفسر كيفية تحرك العالم على مستويات ميكروسكوبية.

ومن المعلوم أن الجزيئات الكمية، مثل الفوتون، يمكن أن توجد في تراكيب طبقتين في نفس الوقت مقارنة بالترانزيستورات في الحاسوب. والفوتونات الخالية نسبيا أيضا من الضوضاء وتسمح بنقل المعلومات بسرعة الضوء.

ويمكن استخدام هذه التقنية في النهاية لجعل وصلات الإنترنت آمنة ولتطوير مواد وأدوية جديدة.

ويذكر أن فريق البحث من مركز علم النانو ومعلومات الكم قضى عدة سنوات في تطوير أجهزة تستخدم الفوتونات على رقاقة سليكون.

وقال رئيس الفريق إن "هذه الطريقة ستقود إلى أجهزة متناهية الصغر وعالية الأداء وقابلة للتطوير. وإنجاز خوارزم (منهاج للحساب) كمي على رقاقة، خطوة في غاية الأهمية نحو ابتكار حاسوب كمي بصري كامل".

Study Says Men Look First at a Woman’s Body

But choose depending on face when looking for a long-term relationship

Researchers have often asked themselves (and they are certainly not alone in doing so) what is the first thing that men look at when making contact with a woman, her face or her body. While previous studies have tried to come up with an answer to that by analyzing each aspect alone, a new research has managed to factor them both jointly and separately, as SciTechBits can confirm.
According to the findings, men look at a woman’s face first, therefore rate it higher, if they’re looking for a long-term relationship. However, if they want only a fling or something that comes with a deadline or few strings attached, their focus changes on the woman’s body, meaning, they judge her the by-now-all-too-popular WHR (waist-hip-ration) standard.

The former has to do with a woman’s personality, many traits of which can be “read” in the face, while the latter happens for obvious reasons, hailing back to the days when men still picked their mates based on such considerations as fertility and health.
Researchers took 260 volunteers, 127 men and 133 women, and presented them with photos of models, all of them as similar to one another as possible. Some photos were just head shots, while the others showed a model’s body in underwear. Great effort went into making the photos stick to the same pattern: all underwear was black, hair was removed from the body shots (which did not include the head and only went down to the knees), each face was framed as to cover the hair, while the same distance between camera and the model was maintained.
All participants were asked to rate the photos shown to them on criteria such as a long-term or a short-term relationship, each participant was shown a head shot, a body shot and then a combined photo, but with the head placed next to the body and not on top of it.
“Statistical analysis of men rating women indicated that, even though both the body and face ratings were significant positive predictors of the ratings given to the combined images, the face ratings were stronger predictors of the combined ratings. It was also observed that the ratings for combined images was [sic] slightly higher for short term relationships as compared to long term relationships. One other significant observation – when the short term and long term relationship data were analyzed separately, the body ratings stood as more significant predictors to the combined ratings than face ratings, for short term relationships.” the aforementioned e-zine says.
The answer seems to be clear: men rate the attractiveness of the body higher for short-term affairs, and the face for long-term commitment. “Statistically, this study proves that men and women approach long-term relationships (attractiveness) in a similar fashion ie, paying more attention to the face. However, for short-term relationships, men are liberal in rating women for attractiveness (this coincides with an earlier study which tells that – minimum acceptable levels for a number of factors increased with the length of relationship sought) and also give more importance to the body than the face.” SciTechBits concludes by saying.

I was recently pointed to a comparative study of free antivirus solutions done by PC World and performed by AV-Test.org, comparing Panda Cloud Antivirus, Avira, avast!, Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, Comodo, PC Tools, and ClamAV.

Altough the editorial did not include Panda Cloud Antivirus in the ranking chart as it could not test the retrospective detection using 2 and 4 week old signatures (as Panda Cloud Antivirus works in the cloud and therefore cannot use 2 & 4 week old signatures), it had this to say about Panda Cloud Antivirus:

Among all of the free antivirus software we tested for our latest roundup, Panda Cloud Antivirus was the best app at blocking known malware.

The approach is intended to take advantage of the latest signatures without the need for signature-database updates–and if its excellent showing at detecting malware in AV-Test.org’s zoo of half a million samples is any indication, the approach works. Panda’s app produced an impressive 99.4 percent overall detection rate.

For now, we can’t give Panda’s app a complete score, but its impressive ability to detect malware makes it well worth keeping an eye on.

Die überraschenden Untersuchungsergebnisse stammen von der englischen Firma "Reign Design", die unter anderem die Anwendung "Finde den Unterschied" für das iPhone entwickelte. Bei der Versuchsreihe wurden ausschließlich männlichen Probanden gebeten, eine einfache Aufgabe zu lösen: Anhand zweier, nur scheinbar identischer Bilder sollten von den Männern Unterschiede ausgemacht werden.

Das Suchspiel wurde mit zwei unterschiedlichen Motiven durchgeführt: Einmal mit eher langweiligen Gebäuden, das andere Mal mit sehr ansprechenden Bikini-Schönheiten. Das Resultat verblüffte: Während die Versuchspersonen bei den Gebäuden völlig versagten, waren die Herren bei den Pinup-Girls hoch konzentriert und schnitten deutlich besser ab. Die Reaktionszeit war um 31 Prozent kürzer und die Trefferquote um satte 21 Prozent erhöht.

Demnach bewirkt die intensive Betrachtung eines heißen Bikini-Girls nicht etwa den mentalen Total-Ausfall des Mannes, wie man weitläufig annehmen sollte. Entsprechend verwundert äußerte sich auch Black Qin von "Reign Design" gegenüber "Bild.de": " Das Ergebnis hat uns erstaunt. Wir dachten eigentlich, dass Männer beim Anblick scharfer Mädels abgelenkt werden und den Überblick verlieren würden."

So darf man sich nun ab sofort getrost über das tägliche "Gehirn-Training" und visuellen Genüssen leicht bekleideter Frauen freuen. Und auch die vermeintlich verärgerten Partnerinnen sollten über das "Fremd-Gaffen" ihrer Götter-Gatten jubeln: Wie bereits Anfang des Jahres eine Studie der Newcastle University bewies, sind kluge Männer auch die besseren Liebhaber.
